Celebrating Veterans Day in Virginia and the Carolinas

Veterans Day, November 11, is the holiday reserved for honoring all Americans who served honorably in the armed forces. It falls on the anniversary of the armistice, a preliminary peace accord between the Allies and Germany, which marked the end of World War I hostilities. The nation observed Armistice Day until Congress officially instituted the new holiday in 1954.

The areas we serve have a rich military history and hold Veterans Day events at various historic sites. These observances make for splendid family outings, and also afford the opportunity for quiet reflection on our nation’s debt to those who answered the call to military service. The Commonwealth of Virginia lists many noteworthy observances on its website, including events at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford; George Washington’s estate, Mount Vernon; and Yorktown, the site of the last battle of the American Revolution. Another popular site for Veterans Day is Arlington National Cemetery, which offers visitors the opportunity to “honor, remember and explore.”

Veterans Day parades and other events are held in communities throughout North Carolina and South Carolina. The popular website Vetfriends.com is a good resource for listings in your area and throughout these two states.

As a law firm dedicated to veterans’ rights, we strongly support activities that honor and commemorate military service. Whether you have served in uniform or not, Marcari, Russotto, Spencer & Balaban urges you and your family to participate in your community’s events. Adults should model for their children the virtue of gratitude towards veterans, so that the nobility of sacrifice is not lost from one generation to the next.
