Recognized VA Conditions

Legal Assistance for Claims of Recognized VA Conditions

Benefits are available for veterans who qualify

There are many categories of diseases that the VA recognizes as having a connection to military service. In many instances, the connection is so firmly established that a veteran is presumed to have acquired the condition from service. This presumption makes it much easier to file a successful claim for benefits. However, eligible veterans with legitimate claims still must contend with denials and insufficient awards. At Marcari, Russotto, Spencer & Balaban, our experienced and accredited attorneys work diligently to resolve problems so that veterans and their families get the benefits they deserve.

Diseases and conditions common to service veterans

The Office of Public Health focuses on certain medical conditions that may affect Veterans. Find out more about these diseases and conditions:

  • Agent Orange — Exposure-related diseases include certain cancers, Chloracne, Parkinson’s disease, Peripheral Neuropathy, Diabetes Mellitus type 2 and ischemic heart disease. Certain birth defects such as spina bifida in biological children of veterans are associated with military service in Vietnam or Korea.
  • Camp Lejeune toxic exposure— Veterans and family members who resided for 30 days or more at Camp Lejeune from 1953 to 1987 may be eligible for compensation for a variety of cancers and other conditions due to toxic contamination of the water supply.
  • Ebola — U.S. military personnel have served in areas where this virus is epidemic.
  • Infectious diseases— Certain diseases, such as malaria and West Nile virus, have been prevalent in veterans serving in the Southwest Asia theater of military operations during the Gulf War from August 2, 1990 to the present and in Afghanistan on or after September 19, 2001.
  • Traumatic brain injury — Service personnel in combat are susceptible to concussions and brain injury caused by explosions. Even a moderate TBI can produce total disability.
  • Rabies — Troops deployed oversees who are bitten by animals or exposed to the animal’s saliva are at risk.
  • Gulf War Syndrome — The VA does not require Gulf War veterans to prove a connection between their military service and certain undiagnosed and unexplained illnesses.
  • Viral hepatitis — Hepatitis A, B and C can produce disabling symptoms, but with proper care, these diseases are manageable.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder — Combat veterans can experience cognitive impairments and emotional difficulties following service.
  • Radiation exposure-related diseases — Certain cancers have been linked to ionizing radiation exposure during military service.
