  • Gulf War Syndrome
  • Other mental impairments
  • Back and spinal injuries

Post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder that can occur after you have been through a traumatic event. If you are in the military and have engaged in intense and prolonged combat, you likely were on missions that exposed you to terrible, life-threatening circumstances. You may have seen comrades die or been shot at or injured yourself.

If you still feel anger, fear or confusion about traumatic events, and these feelings seem to worsen, you may be suffering from PTSD. Sometimes, PTSD can be so severe and debilitating that going through your daily routine is impossible.

Experts believe 11 to 20 percent of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and 10 percent of Desert Storm veterans suffer from PTSD. About 30 percent of Vietnam vets suffer from PTSD.

Improved battlefield medical care saves more lives, so more severely injured soldiers survive and suffer from PTSD. Longer deployments mean more exposure to the traumas that can trigger PTSD. Mental health treatment remains in short supply.

Traumatic brain injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are some of the most common injuries suffered by service members. TBI frequently is not diagnosed immediately after an accident or traumatic event. In fact, it usually is first diagnosed as something else, leading the patient to believe nothing is really wrong.

Symptoms of TBI include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Loss of memory (amnesic gaps)
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Impaired memory
  • Loss of concentration
  • Outbursts
  • Loss of temper

Toxic exposure

The VA compensates veterans who suffer from chronic disabilities related to chemical exposure in battle or on the job. It can be difficult to link diseases such as cancer and leukemia to toxic exposures, particularly if the disease takes years to show up.

If you have been exposed to dangerous chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, Agent Orange, energy sources or hazardous waste while serving in the military and you suffer from a disability or disease, including chronic unexplained illnesses or Gulf War Syndrome, you may be eligible for monthly VA benefits and healthcare benefits.

A condition commonly referred to as Gulf War Syndrome refers to medically unexplained illnesses and diseases suffered by Gulf War veterans.
